Butcher Holler In Stores Today
Tue, Jul. 27 2010
Butcher Holler hits retail today...you know what to do. The album jumped 16 spots to #24 at Americana Radio and is #1 at The Roots Music Report. Here is some recent press...
"There's an irresistible snap to these songs- they're tight, deliciously twangy and rendered without orchestrated frills...[a] deft tribute." - The Boston Globe
"But what was a surprise that night and on her new album called Butcher Holler, was how incredibly natural Jewell is to carry the torch of Lynn’s amazing, heartfelt tunes." - No Depression
"If any single roots artist is capable of tackling Lynn's extensive body of work, it's Eilen Jewell..." - American Twang
"[Opener] “Fist City” manages to maintain the essence of Loretta’s original performance, as well as the fun and flirty nature of Eilen’s music. It’s a marriage that plays itself out effortlessly through 12 tracks of Loretta staples. This CD is most definitely essential listening..." - ninebullets.net
"It's apparent that Jewell is one of the few singers who could have pulled off a project of this magnitude with such sincerity and such success." (FOUR STARS) - Springfield Republican
"Seldom does an album recorded today capture what the music was then—in any genre. Welcome to a real exception. Butcher Holler nailed it. They captured the sound and the feel... This is Country & Western. This is what it was." - FAME

Raleigh Press...Midwest Up Next!
Mon, Jun. 28 2010
The Independent Weekly picked last weekend's Berkeley Cafe show:
"Jewell's deliberate alto blows steady and arid across generally sparse, lonesome arrangements. She's a little like a natural athlete in that her voice moves with such matter-of-fact austerity it seems to expend little effort. Indeed, it rather recalls the downbeat delivery of Trailer Bride-era Melissa Swingle. Though Jewell's first two albums preoccupied themselves with smoky country and swing, the familiar reverb twang of last year's Sea of Tears extends into the more bustling tempos of rockabilly. Jewell's a testament to "less is more," demonstrating sneaky knockout power with her unwillingness to over-sing."
EJ takes the tour to the Midwest next...with stops at Rhythm On the River (Pomery, OH) on July 2nd, Berwyn, IL (Fitzgerald's Great American Music Festival) on July 3rd & Nashville, IN (WFHB July 4th Benefit). Click on the shows link for more info!

SF Weekly and Santa Cruz's Good Times
Thu, Jun. 17 2010
The San Francisco Weekly picks tonight's show at Hotel Utah:
"While still containing Jewell's angsty lyrics, her current originals feature a new-found vocal slinkiness, as well as duck-walking dollops of swampy guitar, courtesy of longtime axeman Jerry Miller. And in case listeners were worried she'd cast away all country influence, she delivers a ripping version of Loretta Lynn's 'The Darkest Day'..."

And...Santa Cruz's Good Times picked the show last night:
"With a website declaring “Nothing but a lonely rambler girl,” and albums like Letters from Sinners and Strangers and Sea of Tears, Massachusetts singer-songwriter Eilen Jewell delves unabashedly into retro ballads and longing swoons that incur Dusty Springfield and Loretta Lynn comparisons. Rueful and hazy songs like “Boundary County” draw out Jewell’s dark vocals and a bluesy warmth that betray her young age, while uptempo, rolling country rhythms on songs like “Too Hot to Sleep” see guitarist Jerry Miller’s surf twang steel strings playing the foil to the alluring songstress.
Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll
Tue, Jun. 15 2010
Eilen is a 2010 Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll Winner in the National Singer-Songwriter category! Thanks to all who voted.
"Boston's own Eilen Jewell has been pounding souls into submission for the past five years with a bottomless well of bum-out beauties. 'Make no fuss over my grave/Just plant something pretty and call it a day,' she croons over a lazy shuffle on 'Rain Rolls In' — if you're looking for peppier subject matter, it's gonna be a long night. Jewell has made a delicate shack of lived-in roots and sun-faded Nashville twang in which to store her heartbreak while audiences throughout the US and Europe have lined up for a peek inside. This year's Sea of Tears (Signature Sound) nixed the fiddle and added gritty '50s rockabilly and soul, but the rock-club touches just make her seem even more like her own one-woman sleeper cell in a world populated by shaggy Jeff Bridges look-alikes. 'It's a rich man's world,' Jewell sings over a peppy bar-room two-step, but she's making pretty good use of it."

Portland Phoenix Pick
Fri, Jan. 15 2010
EJ's Portland, Maine show on Saturday is an editor's pick in the Portland Phoenix: "Bolstered by a phenomenal title track, with an ache and a surfy twang that wouldn’t be out of place substituting a Nancy Sinatra song on a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack, Eilen Jewell’s latest album, Sea of Tears, caused quite a stir in the roots/Americana world in 2009. You can see the whip-smart, charismatic Boston-area singer at One Longfellow Square at 8 pm, where she plays with Milton."

ALT.COUNTRY.NL: Eilen Jewell is ingehouden sexy; haar countrysnik in feite pure jazz. Ze zingt zo makkelijk, forceert nergens.

No Depression: Jewell evokes the same knowingly dolorous spirit as contemporaries Madeleine Peyroux or Jolie Holland as well as her obvious vocal influences Loretta Lynn and Billie Holiday. With her casual, along-for-the-ride delivery, Jewell convincingly conveys heartbreak and disappointment as routine and expected parts of her day.

Off Center Views: Jewell’s languid vocal is icily sexy. This music is where rockabilly, Chicago blues, café jazz, country, ands swing collide and create a new musical galaxy.

California Chronicle & Idaho Statesmen: "Sea of Tears" retains some twang _ it includes a cover of Loretta Lynn's "The Darkest Day" _ but the inspiration comes mainly from '50s and '60s rock. The results, however, are just as mesmerizing.

Maverick (UK): 5 stars-Every track is a gem

AMA Radio Chart: Sea of Tears debuts at #32

Patriot Ledger: Cambridge based songwriter a rising star

UNCUT (UK): 4 stars-She's not unlike UNCUT favourites Neko Case and Kate Maki in her lovely balance of strident country and rural balladry

Sea of Tears
Thu, Jan. 22 2009
On April 21st, Signature Sounds will release Eilen Jewell’s third album, Sea of Tears, a recording that fills in a vital, hitherto missing element of her musical persona. “Before I discovered Woody Guthrie and folk music,” she explains, “I was listening to Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and, later on, the Animals and the Kinks. I love that stuff, and I love to play it.”
With Sea of Tears, Jewell and her longtime band of Jason Beek (drums, harmony vocals), Jerry Miller (electric, acoustic, and steel guitars), and Johnny Sciascia (upright bass) wed her elegantly unflinching songwriting with a rustic, pre-Beatles swagger that encapsulates vintage R&B, Midwestern garage rock, Chicago blues, and early rock and rockabilly, while maintaining the haunting, folk-inspired purity that first made her an artist to watch.

Hickory Wind Interview/Charlotte Review
Wed, Nov. 14 2007
"Jewell picks her acoustic guitar in a clawhammer style, like Maybelle Carter -- thumbing out the bass line and flicking the chords with the backs of her fingers. On stage, her voice musters all the warmth and sensitivity of her studio performances. The band is hot. They trade some of their studio nuance for straight-ahead rockabilly fury, and several people in the crowd literally howl in approval."

Mon, Aug. 13 2007
The Philadelphia Inquirier reviews LFS&S: "On her song "In the End," Eilen (pronounced EEL-in) Jewell conveys a plaintive world-weariness that very much recalls Lucinda Williams. That old-soul quality pervades the rest of the 27-year-old singer and songwriter's national debut; but the way she insinuates herself into classic country, folk and blues styles is very much her own, and makes this insistently low-key performer one of the freshest and most exciting new voices in Americana." The Cambridge Chronicle featured Eilen in last Friday's edition of the weekly paper.

WUMB recently said of Eilen, "She heads up the hottest new band in town playing music that could have stood on its own in Depression Era honky tonks."

Texas-based 3rd Coast Music Magazine recently gave a positive review of LFS&S. In addition to calling her the "runaway hit" at his Not SXSW event in Austin last March, John Conquest raves, "Her eight originals, especially In The End, are very fine."

Vintage Guitar Magazine writes, "Her sweet jazz–inflected voice contrasts with roots style arrangements to create an old-timey 40’s ambience...Her song, “Heartache Boulevard,” severely swings due in large part to Jerry Millers’ tasteful guitar playing."

Eilen and Letters from Sinners and Strangers receive praise in Rochester:

I saw Jewell last March in Austin and fell in love with this Boston via Idaho, alt-country singer-songwriter. She's world weary, fer sure, "a lonely rambler girl" as she croons in "'Rich Man's World." You can smell the dust in Jewell's blonde hair.

Letters From Sinners and Strangers Hits the Press
Wed, May. 30 2007
Reviews for Letters From Sinners and Strangers, the new album from Eilen Jewell, is starting to make waves in the press. Just in from Songs:Illinois: This record should be a wake-up call to Lucinda Williams, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle etc, etc; that they somehow need to get back to their roots, get back to when they were hungry, back to when they were doing it all themselves without high priced producers and impeccable session players; basically back to when they gave a damn.

About.com: Her band is top-notch, and their musicianship cannot be overstated on this release. Perhaps the most telling feature of the album is she and the band don't do with the songs. They don't pack each tune with as much sound as possible. Every song allows the listener breathing room and a chance to interpret. Eilen, a designated soprano, never overstates her vocals and hangs back enough to let each track flow.

FAME Sounding like a hand picked playlist from Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour, Letters From Sinners and Strangers, Jewell's national debut, is a rousing tour de force.
